What is Vapi?

Vapi is a developer platform for building voice AI agents that make and receive phone calls, and it handles the call infrastructure. Each assistant combines a speech-to-text provider, a language model and a text-to-speech voice, and it can be run from the dashboard (no-code phone setup) or embedded in apps through web SDKs and the API.

Who it's for

Vapi's docs describe agents for inbound and outbound calls such as customer support, lead qualification and appointment booking, aimed at developers and teams who want to pick their own model providers. Regulated or high-volume users are pointed to add-ons (HIPAA) and the sales-led Premier package.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • Vapi's pricing page says transcriber, language model, voice and provider telephony costs are billed at provider cost (passed through), and you can supply your own provider keys (BYOK).
  • The pricing page lists Vapi Telephony/SIP, WebSockets and Daily WebRTC as free, with provider-charged telephony such as Twilio, Vonage and Telnyx billed separately.
  • The docs list Squads, which hand a call between several specialized assistants, plus versioning, simulations, monitoring, a CLI and config-as-code support.
  • The docs name OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Gladia, Deepgram and ElevenLabs among supported providers, and let you send recordings, transcripts and logs to your own AWS S3, GCP, Cloudflare R2, Supabase or Azure bucket.
  • The terms say Vapi does not share Your Content with third-party services for their independent model training, and a Zero Data Retention setting stops call content from being stored after a call ends.
  • The docs list an optional HIPAA mode with a signed BAA (paid add-on) and an EU region (Premier package).

Limitations

  • The pricing page lists a prepaid $0.05 per minute Vapi hosting fee on top of provider and telephony costs, so total per-minute cost depends on the stack you choose (its example for 1,000 minutes is an estimated $82 to $129 a month).
  • There is no permanent free plan. The no-package tier has 4 concurrent calls, 2 organizations, 1 phone number, 14 days of raw data retention and no response or uptime SLA.
  • Add-ons are priced separately on the pricing page: HIPAA compliance $2,000 a month, extra concurrency $10 per line a month, extra organizations $20 per organization a month. Pro is 10% of the hosting fee with a $999 a month minimum. SSO and the EU region are not included in Core or Pro; the docs list them for Premier only. Core has no uptime SLA, and the docs list a 99% uptime SLA for Pro and 99.9% for Premier.
  • Fees are described in the terms as earned as incurred and non-refundable except as required by law; refunds on termination are at Vapi's discretion. Billing is prepaid credits, and at a $0 balance with auto-reload off the subscription is frozen and no new calls can start.
  • Vapi's own pages disagree on the starter credit: the pricing page says $5, while docs.vapi.ai/pricing says $10. HIPAA mode and Zero Data Retention cannot be enabled together, and HIPAA mode limits access to features such as reviewing call logs.

Plans and pricing

  • No Success Package (usage only): $0 subscription, pay per minute. Pricing page: prepaid $0.05 per minute hosting plus provider costs; starter credit $5 (docs say $10); 4 concurrent calls, 2 organizations, 1 phone number, 14 days raw data retention; Discord and email support with no SLA.
  • Core: $29 a month. Pricing page: 10 concurrent calls, 2 organizations, 5 phone numbers, 30 days retention, 2-business-day response SLA, no uptime SLA; ZDR listed. Annual billing not listed.
  • Pro: 10% of Vapi hosting fee, $999 a month minimum. Pricing page: 30 concurrent calls, 10 organizations, 10 phone numbers, 180 days retention, basic roles, dedicated Slack, 1-business-day response SLA, 99% uptime SLA.
  • Premier: Custom (direct sales only). Custom limits and retention, custom RBAC and SSO, EU region by contacting sales, named support team, 1-hour P0 response SLA, 99.9% uptime SLA.
  • Add-ons (any package): HIPAA $2,000 a month; extra line $10 a month; extra organization $20 a month. Pricing page lists these as available with usage only or any package. Success Packages are currently for new customers; legacy customers keep their existing terms.

Prices were read from vapi.ai/pricing (fetched through a URL carrying an affiliate parameter) and from Vapi's docs pages on packages, enterprise and billing; the docs pages list limits and SLAs but not dollar amounts. Prices are in US dollars on a monthly basis; the sources do not state an annual option, and the starter credit conflicts ($5 vs $10). Confirm on the live pricing page.
