What is Rev?
Rev is a transcription service that turns audio and video into text with AI, and offers human-verified transcripts and captions as paid extras. It runs on the web and in iOS and Android apps for recording and dictation, and has a separate developer API at rev.ai.
Who it's for
Rev's current homepage is aimed at legal and investigative work: law firms, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law enforcement and court reporters. Its AI transcription and captions are also sold pay-as-you-go to general users, and the vendor lists no consumer-only plan.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- Rev lists AI transcription at $0.25 per minute pay-as-you-go, with subscription plans from a free tier up to custom enterprise.
- The Free plan includes 45 AI minutes a month for 1 user, English-only transcription, analysis of up to 5 files at a time and the mobile app.
- Essentials adds English and Spanish transcription and Pro lists 37+ languages including Spanglish, with 5,000 and 10,000 AI minutes per user a month.
- AI minutes are pooled at the account level, so a user who goes over their seat allotment draws from the account's remaining minutes.
- Rev says uploads can come from Clio, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive or OneDrive or by pasting a URL, and Pro lists a Clio Manage integration.
- Rev lists SOC 2 Type 2, and HIPAA and CJIS environments on the Unlimited (enterprise) tier, with SSO and MFA for enterprise accounts.
Limitations
- Rev's AI transcription page cites 95%+ accuracy in one place and 96%+ in its headline and FAQ, and says accuracy depends on audio quality, background noise and speaker count.
- Rev's support page is inconsistent on training: the AI FAQ says customer data is not used to train AI models or LLMs, while the General FAQ answers Yes when asked whether audio and transcript files are used to train its service. Confirm before uploading sensitive audio.
- Free is English-only and capped at 45 AI minutes a month; Spanish needs Essentials and 37+ languages need Pro.
- Human transcription is billed separately at $1.99 per minute (99%+ accuracy, delivered in 12 hours or less), human captions start at $1.99 per minute, and legal transcripts are $2.25 to $2.50 per page and are not discounted by subscriptions.
- HIPAA is available only on Enterprise plans and requires a Business Associate Agreement. Rev's pages do not say whether unused minutes roll over or what happens when pooled minutes run out, and the page that was read states no refund terms.
