What is Clay?
Clay is a web-based go-to-market platform that enriches prospect and company records in tables using a marketplace of third-party data providers plus AI research agents. It can also sync to CRMs and data warehouses and send email through its Sequencer or other integrations.
Who it's for
Clay's plan FAQ points Launch at individuals and small teams starting prospecting workflows, Growth at teams scaling their outbound motion that need CRM sync, API access or ad audiences, and Enterprise at large operations needing security and governance. It is built for sales, revenue and marketing teams working with lead and account lists rather than for general-purpose AI use.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- Clay's docs say Actions meter platform work such as enrichments, AI runs, signals and exports, while Data Credits meter data-marketplace purchases and AI usage, with most enrichments using both.
- Clay says connecting your own provider API keys removes the Data Credit cost for those enrichments, although each enrichment still uses one Action.
- Clay's pricing page lists unlimited seats and unlimited tables on every plan, including Free.
- Clay's AI docs list Claygent research agents, a Sculptor chat assistant for building and debugging tables, a formula generator, and an API request generator, using models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google plus Clay's own models.
- Clay's pricing page lists CRM auto-sync, data warehouse sync, HTTP API integrations and webhook signals on Growth, and SSO/SAML, SCIM, IP allowlists, RBAC and a custom DPA on Enterprise.
- Clay's AI docs say it does not train or fine-tune models on customer data except where the data is used solely for your own workspace, and that its AI providers are contractually barred from training on it.
Limitations
- Price is a base fee that bundles an Actions tier and a Data Credits tier, so the $167 and $446 starting prices cover only the smallest tier; higher tiers go up to 200,000 Actions and 50,000 Data Credits a month on the pricing page.
- Clay says Actions reset each cycle and cannot be topped up. Top-ups add only Data Credits, carry a 30% premium (50% on legacy plans), and are capped at 4 times the monthly credit allocation.
- The Free plan is capped at 500 Actions, 100 Data Credits a month and 200 rows per table, and excludes phone number enrichment, signals, Audiences, CRM integrations, bulk enrichment and credit rollover.
- Clay's terms say paid contracts renew automatically at Clay's current rates, must be cancelled before the renewal date, and that all fees are non-refundable except as the agreement provides. They also say Clay may change prices with notice.
- Clay's own pages disagree in places: the pricing page FAQ says Free includes the Sequencer while its comparison table marks email campaigns as not included; credit rollover is described as up to 2 times the monthly amount in the FAQ and as up to 1 month's credits in the table; the free-trial FAQ lists 2,000 credits, 50 rows per table and 10,000 actions while the pricing page lists a 14-day trial; and the docs list Enterprise at 100,000+ Actions while a third-party article lists 200,000+.
Plans and pricing
- Free: $0. 500 Actions (6,000 a year) and 100 Data Credits (1,200 a year) a month, up to 200 rows per table. Waterfalls, Claygent and bring-your-own API keys. No phone enrichment, signals, CRM integrations or rollover.
- Launch: $167 a month billed annually, or $185 monthly. From 15,000 Actions and 2,500 Data Credits a month, with higher tiers available. Up to 50,000 rows per table. Adds phone number enrichment, job-change signals, Audiences search and email sending.
- Growth: $446 a month billed annually, or $495 monthly. From 40,000 Actions and 6,000 Data Credits a month, with higher tiers available. Adds CRM auto-sync, data warehouse sync, HTTP API, webhooks, web intent signals, ad audiences and priority support.
- Enterprise: Custom, annual commitment. Custom Actions and Data Credits (docs list 100,000+ of each). Adds bulk enrichment above 50,000 records, SSO/SAML, SCIM, RBAC, IP allowlists, custom DPA and a dedicated growth strategist.
Prices and allowances were read from clay.com/pricing and Clay's plan FAQ, docs and pricing-change announcement; they are in US dollars. The $167 and $446 figures are monthly equivalents on annual billing, and Clay's page shows a 14-day trial on paid plans. Legacy Starter, Explorer and Pro plans still exist for existing customers. Confirm on the live pricing page, since the pricing page and FAQs conflict on a few details.
