What is Spellbook?

Spellbook is an AI contract tool that reviews documents and suggests redlines, drafts clauses or full agreements from a prompt, and answers questions about a contract. It runs as a Microsoft Word add-in, a Google Docs side panel with a Chrome extension, and a web app called Associate for multi-document projects.

Who it's for

The vendor aims it at transactional lawyers at law firms and in-house legal teams. It is sold to teams on a custom quote, and the vendor's pages do not describe a plan for individual consumers.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • The vendor lists Review (document-wide analysis with risks and missing clauses shown as tracked-change redlines), Draft (clauses or full agreements from a prompt, using a built-in library or a firm's own precedents), and Ask (contract Q&A with citations to the contract text).
  • The vendor lists Associate, an agent for multi-document, multi-step work such as preparing document packages from a term sheet or reviewing a data room, and Playbooks that encode a legal team's standards.
  • The help center says the Word add-in works on macOS and Windows, the Google Docs add-in needs the Chrome extension to insert suggested edits, and admins can deploy the Word add-in through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. It lists SSO and says IT must approve two apps in Microsoft Entra.
  • Spellbook says it has zero data retention agreements with its underlying LLM providers (it names OpenAI and Anthropic), so contract data is not retained, copied or used for AI training by them. It also says it is SOC 2 Type II certified, with encryption in transit and at rest.
  • Spellbook's terms say the customer owns Customer Data and Outputs, and that customer-specific personalization data will not be used to improve services for other customers.
  • The vendor says every plan includes all features, training and support, and offers a 7-day free trial, with extended trials for larger teams (Reported on vendor comparison pages).

Limitations

  • Pricing is not published. Vendor pages say Spellbook uses custom, per-seat pricing based on team size, billed annually (Reported), and that quotes come after a demo. The official pricing page could not be read for this profile.
  • Spellbook's terms say fees are non-refundable, except a refund of the remaining months if Spellbook terminates after an IP infringement breach. A separate Refund Policy is referenced but was not read.
  • Per the terms, orders auto-renew for 12-month periods unless either party gives notice at least 30 days before expiry. A customer ending early must pay the rest of the term. Renewal increases are capped at 10% a year unless functionality changes materially.
  • The terms say Spellbook may keep quality-assurance data up to 90 days, and abuse-monitoring data up to 30 days for self-serve users. They also let Spellbook create and own anonymous derived data for its own business purposes, and they do not expressly bar using it to improve its own products.
  • The terms state that output is not formal legal advice, is for informational purposes only, and should be vetted by a licensed lawyer when appropriate. Vendor pages disagree on Google Docs: a comparison page does not mention it, while the help center and a pricing-comparison page do. They also give different customer counts (over 4,000 and over 5,000 legal teams).

Plans and pricing

  • Free trial: $0. 7-day free trial; the vendor says larger teams can get extended trials. This is a trial, not a free plan.
  • Team license: Custom, per seat. Price set by number of team members on a license, billed annually (Reported). All features, training and support are included per the vendor. No dollar figures are published.
  • Larger teams (10+ seats): Custom. The vendor says volume discounts are available for teams of 10 or more. Quotes come from sales after a demo.

Spellbook does not publish prices. Tiers and billing basis above come from vendor comparison pages and the terms of service; the official pricing page (the old spellbook.legal address now redirects to spellbook.com/pricing) could not be fetched, so mark these as Reported. Confirm on the live pricing page.

Details checked October 2026 against the vendor's own pages. Prices and limits change, so confirm before you buy. Official pricing page ↗
