What is Midjourney?
Midjourney is a subscription service that generates images, and short videos from images, from text prompts. It runs on the midjourney.com website and in Discord.
Who it's for
Individuals and companies that want to generate images or short animated clips from prompts. Midjourney's plans page says companies with more than $1,000,000 USD in gross annual revenue must use the Pro or Mega plan.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- All plans work on both the midjourney.com website and in Discord, once a Discord account is connected in Account Settings
- Standard, Pro and Mega include Relax Mode with unlimited image generations. Fast GPU time is 3.3 hours a month on Basic, 15 on Standard, 30 on Pro and 60 on Mega
- Video is made from an image: a 5-second start with up to 4 extensions of 4 seconds each (21 seconds at most), in HD (720p) on Standard, Pro and Mega in Fast Mode
- Stealth Mode, which keeps images and videos private, is available on Pro and Mega
- The docs say annual billing is 20% cheaper than monthly, and extra Fast GPU time costs $4 an hour on every plan
Limitations
- The website and Discord have no free tier or free trial. The docs list only a limited trial on the niji journey mobile app
- Basic has no Relax Mode, so once its 3.3 Fast hours are used you need to buy extra GPU time to keep generating
- Stealth Mode is only on Pro and Mega, so images made on Basic and Standard cannot be made private
- Companies with more than $1,000,000 USD in gross annual revenue must buy Pro or Mega
- Video uses far more GPU time than images (a batch of 4 SD videos takes 8 minutes, HD 26 minutes), and Relax video is SD only and limited to Pro and Mega
- Concurrent Fast image jobs are 3 on Basic and Standard and 12 on Pro and Mega, and queued jobs are capped at 10 on every plan

- Basic: $10 a month, or $8 a month billed annually ($96 a year). 3.3 hours of Fast GPU time, no Relax Mode, 3 concurrent Fast image jobs, SD video only, no Stealth Mode.
- Standard: $30 a month, or $24 a month billed annually ($288 a year). 15 hours of Fast GPU time, unlimited Relax images, 3 concurrent jobs, SD and HD video, no Stealth Mode.
- Pro: $60 a month, or $48 a month billed annually ($576 a year). 30 hours of Fast GPU time, unlimited Relax images and SD Relax video, 12 concurrent Fast image jobs, Stealth Mode.
- Mega: $120 a month, or $96 a month billed annually ($1,152 a year). 60 hours of Fast GPU time, Relax images and SD Relax video, 12 concurrent Fast image jobs, Stealth Mode.
