What is Google Translate?

Google Translate is Google's translation service for text, speech, handwriting, photos, documents and web pages. It runs in a web browser at translate.google.com and in Android and iOS apps; the paid Cloud Translation API is a separate Google Cloud product for developers.

Who it's for

The consumer site and apps suit individuals who need quick translations while reading, traveling or chatting with someone in another language. Teams that need to translate large volumes, bigger files or build translation into their own software are pointed by Google to the Cloud Translation API.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • Google's help page for the Android app says it translates text, handwriting, photos and speech in over 200 languages.
  • The about page lists camera translation, conversation mode, real-time speech transcription, handwriting and voice input, and copy-to-translate in other apps.
  • Languages can be downloaded for offline use; the help page says downloads happen over Wi-Fi by default.
  • Google's help page lists document upload for .docx, .pdf, .pptx and .xlsx files (up to 10 MB, PDFs up to 300 pages) and whole-page translation by entering a URL.
  • Saved words and phrases can be accessed from any device, according to the about page.
  • The Cloud Translation API pricing page lists a monthly free allowance of 500,000 characters for Basic and Advanced text translation, applied as a $10 credit.

Limitations

  • Google's help page says document translation is not available on smaller screens or mobile, and that text inside images and scanned PDF pages is shown but not translated.
  • Offline use is not available for every language (the app shows 'Not available offline'), and camera translation in all languages needs an auto-focus camera and a dual-core ARMv7 CPU, per the help page.
  • The help page says website translation is not available in all regions.
  • The data pages I read do not say whether content typed into the consumer app is used to train models; the privacy help page covers activity data and personalization only. The Cloud Translation data usage FAQ says Google does not use content sent to the API to train and improve its translation features, and does not mention the LLM translation option.
  • The API data usage FAQ says Basic, Advanced and AutoML use global endpoints, so data location cannot be set for them; only Advanced has regional endpoints. The $10 monthly credit is shared across Basic and Advanced, is capped, and does not apply to formatted document translation.

Plans and pricing

  • Google Translate app and website: $0. Free consumer use on the web, Android and iOS. The pages I read list no paid consumer plan and no stated usage cap. Document upload is limited to 10 MB files and PDFs of 300 pages or fewer.
  • Cloud Translation API: Basic (v2): $20 per million characters. Pay as you go after the first 500,000 characters a month (a $10 credit). Over 1,000 million characters a month requires contacting sales. Billed per character sent, including spaces and markup.
  • Cloud Translation API: Advanced (v3) NMT: $20 per million characters. Same free 500,000 characters a month. Adds batch text, XLSX, romanization and regional endpoints. Document translation (DOCX, PPT, PDF) is $0.08 per page.
  • Cloud Translation API: Advanced LLM translation: $10 per million input and $10 per million output characters. Specialized translation LLM text translation. Adaptive translation is $25 per million input and $25 per million output characters. Input and output are billed separately for each target language.
  • Cloud Translation API: custom models: $80 per million characters, falling to $30 at volume. $80 for 500K to 250M characters a month, $60 up to 2,500M, $40 up to 4,000M, $30 above. Free credit is $40 a month. Training is $45 an hour, capped at $300 per job. Document translation is $0.25 per page.

Prices were read from Google's Cloud Translation pricing page (the Spanish Latin America version, in US dollars; the English version was not fetched) and Google's Translate help pages. Google lists no price for the consumer app; the API is billed through a Google Cloud billing account. Confirm on the live pricing page before relying on API figures.

Details checked October 2026 against the vendor's own pages. Prices and limits change, so confirm before you buy. Official pricing page ↗
