What is Gemini Notebook?
Gemini Notebook is Google's AI research assistant, formerly called NotebookLM. It answers questions from the sources you add, with inline citations, and can turn them into audio overviews, video overviews, study guides, briefings, mind maps, flashcards, quizzes, slide decks and reports.
Who it's for
Students, researchers and professionals who want answers drawn from their own documents, links, videos and audio. Google also offers it on work and school accounts when an administrator turns it on.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- Google says answers are grounded in the sources you add and carry inline citations
- Sources can be PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs and Google Slides
- Google lists audio and video overviews, study guides, briefings, mind maps, flashcards, quizzes, infographics, slide decks and reports as outputs
- Google says it handles text, graphs, images and audio across 80+ languages
- Free sign-up with a personal Google account, and Google says generated outputs do not count toward the source limit
Limitations
- Free (Standard) access is limited to 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources per notebook
- Higher notebook and source limits need a paid Google AI plan or a qualifying Workspace plan. It is not sold on its own
- Google says the limits can change. Daily quotas reset after 24 hours and monthly quotas after 30 days
- Google adds a visible watermark to generated outputs for users in India, South Korea and Vietnam. Watermark removal is listed for paid tiers elsewhere
- On personal accounts, thumbs up and down feedback can be reviewed by people, and Google says reviewed feedback is kept for up to 3 years, disconnected from your account
Plans and pricing
- Standard (free): $0. Personal Google account. 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources per notebook.
- Google AI Plus: Reported: $4.99 a month. 200 notebooks per user and 100 sources per notebook, per Google's help page. Tech news reported in June 2026 that Google cut this plan from $7.99 to $4.99. We could not read a dollar amount on Google's own plans page.
- Google AI Pro: Reported: $19.99 a month. 500 notebooks per user and 300 sources per notebook, per Google's help page. The dollar price comes from a news article.
- Google AI Ultra: $100 and $200 a month tiers (Google blog). Google's help page lists 500 notebooks and 500 to 600 sources per notebook for the Ultra tiers. We could not confirm which price goes with which limit.
- Google Workspace and Education: Varies by edition. Standard access is 100 notebooks. The AI Ultra Access add-on raises it to 500 notebooks and 5,000 chats a day, per Google's help page.
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026, according to news coverage of Google's announcement, and the old address now redirects. The limits are from Google's help pages. The Plus and Pro dollar prices are from news coverage (Plus was reported cut from $7.99 to $4.99 in June 2026) because Google's plans page showed no amounts when we read it, so confirm them there.
Details checked October 2026 against the vendor's own pages. Prices and limits change, so confirm before you buy. Official pricing page ↗
