What is Canva?
An online design platform for making graphics, presentations, documents, video and social content from templates, with built-in AI tools for generating images, video, text and designs. The Pro page lists access on the web, desktop, iOS and Android.
Who it's for
Individuals, teams and organizations that make branded visual content; the plans run from Free for one person to Pro for one person, Business with per-person seats, and Enterprise for organizations. The pricing page also says K-12 schools and not-for-profits can use most premium features for free.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- The Australian pricing page lists Free with 5GB storage, 1 Brand Kit and 1.6M+ templates, and says paid plans include 3.6M+ templates and 141M+ premium stock photos, videos, graphics and audio.
- Canva's AI usage help page says Standard AI tools do not count toward the monthly AI allowance on paid plans, and that Translate and Magic Write do not count either.
- The pricing page lists Brand Kits of 5 on Pro, 100 on Business and 1,000 on Enterprise, with approvals on Business and tiered approvals on Enterprise.
- Canva's comparison page says Enterprise includes SSO and SCIM, audit logs, data residency, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certifications, API access and a dedicated customer success manager.
- The AI Pass page describes a monthly add-on for Pro or Business that raises the AI allowance (up to 40x Pro and 20x Business), billed pro rata to the plan's billing cycle and cancelable from the Billing page.
- Canva's privacy page says it will not use your content to improve AI features unless that is consistent with your Privacy Settings, and that it does not use Business, team or Enterprise content for AI improvement.
Limitations
- AI use is metered: the help page lists Free at up to 20 Standard or Premium uses a month and no Ultra tools, Pro at up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses, and Business and Enterprise at up to 400 Premium or 40 Ultra uses. These ranges assume simple prompts, and heavier tools or longer prompts use more.
- When the AI limit is reached, Free tools stay unavailable until it resets (12:00 a.m. UTC on the first of the month); Ultra tools stay unavailable on all plans until reset, and Pro users must upgrade or buy AI Pass. Third-party apps in Canva have their own limits and terms.
- Pro is for one person only, and Business charges per person: the comparison page says each member needs a paid seat. SSO and SCIM are not available on Pro or Business, and the Enterprise pages cite minimums (100+ employees, or 150+ contracted seats for a dedicated success manager).
- The vendor's pages disagree: the Pro page lists $119.99 a year or $12.99 a month for up to 5 people and unlimited storage, while the comparison page lists US$144 a year for one person (US$18 monthly) and 100GB, and the Australian pricing page lists 100GB. The comparison page also describes Business AI as both twice Pro and about 20x Free, versus about 10x for Pro.
- The privacy page says the AI-training setting is controlled in Privacy Settings for individual accounts and does not say how it differs between Free and Pro. Business and Enterprise controls are disabled, with an admin opt-in described as coming soon.
