What is Artbreeder?

Artbreeder is a web platform for generating, mixing and editing images from text and from other images. Its tools page lists Splicer, Mixer 2, Prompter, Composer, Collager, Animator and Outpainter, and the site is used through a browser account (Log In / Sign Up).

Who it's for

It suits people who want to create and edit AI images, and some video, in a browser, and who are comfortable with images being public by default. Subscribers get private mode, so it also fits people who do not want their images public.

Strengths

The tools page lists Splicer (mix images and edit their genes), Mixer 2 (mix images into complex prompts), Prompter (text to images), Composer (mix images and text), Collager (shapes, images and text), Animator (animate text and images) and Outpainter (expand an Artbreeder image).
The updates page says Mixer 2 accepts up to 4 uploaded images (March 2026), and that Prompter's Instruct models, except Kontext, accept up to 4 starting images (September 2026).
The updates page lists third-party image models added over 2026, including GPT Image models, Krea 2 models and Nano Banana models, in Prompter and Mixer 2.
The pricing page lists no ads, privacy controls, Google Drive sync, unlimited image generation in Composer and Splicer fast mode as benefits, and describes Pro as faster rendering and higher resolution downloads.
The support page says private mode images are not seen or used by anyone and stay private if a subscription ends, and that images are public domain (CC0) and may be used commercially.
The updates page says Prompter keeps generations for 30 days (September 2026).

Limitations

Paid plans are metered in credits, listed per year: 1,200 (Starter), 3,300 (Advanced) and 8,400 (Champion). The pricing page shows a cost per credit of $0.07, $0.06 and $0.04, but its Credits and Pro Features sections had no readable text, so what each action costs is not explained there.
The pricing page shows prices as '$X x 12' with Monthly and Yearly toggle labels and does not state the billing basis or yearly totals, and it does not say which benefits belong to which plan.
Animator is labeled Pro only on the tools page. The updates page says free users get 3 free NSFW unflags a day and subscribers get unlimited.
Private mode is for subscribers only. The terms (last updated November 20, 2019) say users license their images under CC0, that Artbreeder may remove images at any time for any reason, and that users should keep their own backups.
The pricing page does not describe the free tier, free credits or refund and cancellation terms, and the terms do not cover subscriptions or refunds.

Prices and credits were read from the official pricing page, which shows '$X x 12' and '/ year' with Monthly and Yearly toggle labels. Whether that means a monthly amount billed 12 times or an annual charge is not stated, and the image counts carry an asterisk with no footnote.
