What is Socket?
Socket is a software supply chain security tool that analyzes open source dependencies for risky behavior and can block malicious packages. It works through a GitHub App, a CLI and API, and IDE, chat and ticketing integrations, and its pricing page also lists an MCP server and AI code agent integration.
Who it's for
Development and security teams that use open source packages in ecosystems such as JavaScript, Python, Go, Java, Ruby, .NET and Rust. The vendor also offers a free plan and says it is free to use for open source.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- The pricing page lists detection of 70+ risk types, auto-blocking of malicious dependencies and AI-powered risk analysis on the Free plan.
- The docs list GA support for JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Go, Java, Ruby, .NET, Scala, Kotlin and Rust, with reachability analysis for those ecosystems and PHP; PHP is listed as Beta.
- The vendor says source code is not uploaded; only manifest files and lockfiles (the dependency list) are collected, sent over HTTPS, and it does not process PII.
- The security page says reports are stored on AWS S3, communication uses TLS, and it shows a SOC 2 Type II badge; the page does not describe the audit scope.
- Business adds SSO/SAML, SBOM import and export, GitHub Actions scanning, AI model scanning, and compliance (for example Vanta), ticketing and SIEM integrations, per the pricing page.
- Enterprise lists function-level reachability, 15+ SAST languages, 800+ secret detectors, SCIM, audit log, an uptime SLA and support for GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps and self-hosted repositories.
Limitations
- Free is capped at 1 developer seat, 1,000 scans a month, 10,000 tracked dependencies, 14 days of scan retention and basic support; reachability analysis, SSO, webhooks and SBOM support are not on Free.
- Pricing is per developer seat, defined as anyone who committed to a Socket-scanned repository in the past 90 days; Team starts at 5 seats and Business at 20, and Team is capped at 5,000 scans a month.
- Function-level reachability, SAST, secret detection, audit log, SCIM, other Git hosts and medium-and-lower severity CVE patches are Enterprise only; Enterprise has no public price.
- The vendor's pages disagree on open source: the pricing page describes a free Team account on request, while the FAQ says qualifying OSI-licensed public projects can request a free Business upgrade.
- Neither the FAQ nor the security page states a general data retention period or whether customer data is used for AI training; the pricing page text read lists no refund terms, only that you can cancel anytime and keep access through the paid period.
Plans and pricing
- Free: $0. 1 dev seat, 1,000 scans a month, 500 API requests, 10,000 tracked dependencies, 14-day scan retention.
- Team: $25 per dev seat a month. From 5 seats, 5,000 scans a month, 2,500 API requests, reachability analysis, Slack alerts, 30-day scan retention.
- Business: $50 per dev seat a month. From 20 seats, unlimited scans, 10,000 API requests, SSO/SAML, SBOM, GitHub Actions and AI model scanning, compliance and ticketing integrations, 90-day retention.
- Enterprise: Custom. Custom seats; adds function-level reachability, SAST, secret detection, SCIM, audit log, other Git hosts, uptime SLA, account manager and 365-day retention.
Prices were read from the official pricing page, which has a Monthly/Yearly toggle and says yearly billing saves up to 20%; the page text read did not show which toggle state the $25 and $50 figures reflect, and the comparison table header says Yearly. The page says prices include taxes and the currency is not stated beyond $. Confirm on the live pricing page.
