About each tool

Grammarly

Writing assistant that checks grammar, spelling, tone and clarity and suggests rewrites in a desktop app, browser extensions, mobile apps and integrations.

Who it is for

Individuals and teams who write in email, documents, chat and on the web and want automated writing suggestions. Pro adds team features such as style guides, brand tones and analytics, and Enterprise adds admin and security controls.

Strengths

  • Free plan at $0 with 100 AI prompts per month
  • Listed integrations include Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Salesforce, PowerPoint, LinkedIn, Microsoft Teams, Google Sheets, Zendesk and Jira
  • Desktop apps for Windows and Mac, browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, an Office add-in, and iPhone, iPad and Android apps
  • Writing support in more than 20 languages
  • Enterprise adds SAML SSO, SCIM, BYOK encryption and data loss prevention

Limitations

  • The free plan has no tone adjustment, full-sentence rewrites, plagiarism or AI-text detection, or team and security features
  • Pro lists 1 style guide, 1 brand tone and 2 user groups; unlimited of each are listed under Enterprise
  • Enterprise has no public price (contact sales)
  • Grammarly says Pro is being rolled out gradually and is not yet available to every customer type, for example Business and Education customers

ProWritingAid

Grammar, style and story-analysis editor with a Free plan (500 words at a time). Premium is $10 a month billed annually ($30 monthly).

Strengths

  • The pricing page lists 25+ writing analysis reports, a custom style guide, a custom dictionary and a comparison against 90 fiction authors on Premium.
  • Premium has no word-count cap and unlimited line editing and Rephrases; Free suggestions are limited to 500 words at a time.
  • Premium Pro adds 30 Chapter Critiques and 50 Sparks per day, weekly live workshops, 200+ on-demand workshops, and up to 65% off Story Credits.
  • ProWritingAid says it will never use your writing to train its algorithms, and says you keep the rights to your writing, including text changed with its AI features.
  • The Teams plan page lists centralized user management, team analytics, AES-256 and TLS encryption, SOC 2 and GDPR compliance, and EU or US hosting on Microsoft Azure.
  • A Free plan works with all integrations, per the vendor's help center, and K-12 educational organizations can get Premium features free through ProWritingAid for Education.

Limitations

  • Free is limited to 500 words at a time, 2 runs per line editing report per day, 10 Rephrases, 3 Sparks and 3 Creative Nudges per day, and basic grammar, spelling, punctuation and thesaurus checks.
  • Premium includes 1 Chapter Critique and 5 Sparks per day; 30 Chapter Critiques and 50 Sparks per day need Premium Pro.
  • Manuscript, Plot, Virtual Beta Reader and Marketability analyses each cost 1 Story Credit per story of up to 300,000 words, and credits are bought separately: one credit is $50 on Free, $35 on Premium and $25 on Premium Pro. Credits are nonrefundable except when the analysis cannot be delivered for technical reasons.
  • Monthly billing is $30 for Premium and $36 for Premium Pro and is not refundable; yearly and lifetime purchases have a 3-day money-back guarantee, requested by email, and canceling does not trigger a refund automatically.
  • The vendor's pages disagree: the pricing page says no team plans are listed, while the Business page lists a Teams plan at $12 per user per month. The pricing page's Free card also lists items such as unlimited Rephrases and Chapter Critique that conflict with the stated Free limits.
